Hey, you! Welcome to our first ever Author Spotlight. Woot woot! I’ve made it my mission in life to find out more about the authors I love and you just get to benefit from it. Lucky ducks! Tonight’s Author Spotlight is focusing on someone who has recently burst out on the scene with a debut novel you might have heard of:

That’s right! The funny and wickedly talented Priscilla Glenn is here to answer a few of my most burning questions (and never fear! ‘Who the heck is the real life Michael?’ is at the top on the list). So without further ado, I give you Priscilla Glenn answering 5 of Judith’s most hard-hitting and obviously journalistic questions:

1. If you were stuck in Boise, Idaho and were only allowed three non-electronic or mechanical things to entertain you, what would they be?

PG:  A tricky one right off the bat – you don’t mess around!

The first one would obviously be a book, although if you ask me which one, I’d have to plead the fifth. It would be way too hard to choose, so I’d probably just go to my shelf of favorites, close my eyes, and grab one.

The next thing would be a journal. I’m a teacher and a mom of three, so I hardly ever have any quiet time. If I were stranded in isolation anywhere and had the opportunity to hear my own thoughts, I’d want to record them for posterity 🙂

The last thing would be colored embroidery floss. When I was younger, my sister, cousin, and I ran a “business” selling friendship bracelets in front of my house. We made them ourselves sold them for fifty cents each. That first summer, we made like sixty bucks and thought we were a pretty big deal 🙂 I can still make a bunch of different types and designs. There’s something very calming and therapeutic about it.

2. Tell me the inspiration for Back To You.

PG: Two of my best friends growing up were guys – one in high school and one in college – and there’s just something different about those kinds of friendships. Both of those relationships were significant turning points in my life. I guess because of that, I’ve always wanted to do a story about guy/girl friendships. Once I had the idea in my head, I started thinking, “What would happen if someone fell in love? What would happen if it all fell apart? What if they found each other again later in life?” And lo and behold, Michael and Lauren were born.

3. What’s your first thought on waking up in the morning?

PG: “I need to start going to bed earlier.”  You’d think eventually I would listen to me. Hasn’t happened yet.

4. What is your personal mantra?

PG: Don’t waste energy fixating on things you can’t control. Instead, keep your focus on those things that you can.

5. Name the 3 most inspiring people to you.

PG: (1) My father. He is the most selfless, loving, supportive, intelligent person I have ever known, and he remains the measure of what a good husband, a good father, and a good person should be in my eyes.

(2) A student I met my second year of teaching. I won’t share her name, but she had a debilitating case of juvenile arthritis that resulted in her being confined wheelchair. Everyday activities were extremely difficult for her, but this girl came to school every day and did everything that was expected of her and then some. Her courage was mind-boggling; in middle school, when being different in any way can be a curse, she totally embraced it. She made no apologies, but at the same time was one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met. An amazingly beautiful girl, inside and out, and whenever I think of her, it gives me perspective.

(3) My twelfth grade English teacher, Mr. Breidster. I had always loved books, but he made me want to teach them. And then through that, I found my love of writing them.

And the bonus question!!! Where can we find the real life Michael? I do solemnly swear not to use this one for my own nefarious purposes…oh I’m just lying!! TELL ME!

PG: I thought you were only teasing about [wanting] the real life inspiration for Michael! HAHA Truth be told, I did have a best friend who was a little bit of a hard-ass in high school. He didn’t have Michael’s sad back story, and we never fell in love, but he was rough and tumble and used to get into fights a lot. 😉

There you have it. Priscilla is such a fun and sparkling personality (really, I went there. Sparkling. It is so not ridiculous to say it. Ok maybe just a little but it’s true, so please don’t laugh) and all I can say is, if you haven’t read her book, Back to You, you’ve got your head stuck somewhere it definitely doesn’t need to be and you should read it. It will rock you! Here’s my review if you still don’t believe me.
