The Best Books I’ve Read Recently

Hey guys! It’s Judith!

I know, I know – I so rarely have a chance to review but this week? I’m on vacation! Which means that instead of just eating and drinking and doing absolutely nothing but enjoy the hedonistic pleasures of the season, I’ve been reading! Lots and lots of books! ALL THE BOOKS!

A few were such standouts, I am coming out of vacation hibernation to urge you all to read them, because yes, they were just that good. Read More

Awesome Reader Recs: Fan Fiction

Fan Fiction: A list of random (and awesome) recs from readers!

Hey, guys! It’s Judith! If you follow me on Twitter you’ve watched my recent discovery of fan fiction slowly unfold over the last week or so. I’m late to the fan fiction game, admittedly, but I’m making up for lost time by reading anything and everything in any fandom that people recommend!

Since I received so many awesome recommendations, and people actually demanded it, I’m passing all that fan fic rec love on to YOU! So in totally random order and with varying degrees of description, here’s a list of reader favorites:

All The Other Ghosts – Fandom: Glee – superhero, totally AU, 300k o.0

If I Die Young – Fandom: Glee – high school, illness, 269k

The Muse – Fandom: Glee – age difference, adapted from another novel

The Anderson Rose – Fandom: Glee – epic, arranged marriage, mpreg

Too In Love To Let It Go – Fandom: Glee – family, grief, 117 boxes of Kleenex

Accidental Memory in Case of Death – Fandom: Merlin – This is the story of Anthony and Emory, two boys living in the modern day who have their lives turned upside down after an incident on a train leaves them inundated with someone else’s memories. It’s the slow, painful, overwhelming struggle as they try to determine their identities in the face of what’s happening to them. The beginning is slow (I started this fic three times before I made it past the first 5k words or so) but it ended up giving me alllll the feelings. (76K words)

Fundamental Imperfection – Fandom: Merlin – “In which an argument about Dickens leads to a twitter scandal, broken bones, midnightconversations, and transatlantic longing. (Or, an AU with Arthur and Merlin as moderately famous authors.)” The adversarial part of this doesn’t last all that long tbh. I don’t know why this story punched me in the gut as strongly as it did, but I actually got kind of emotional over it. Probably my new favorite rom-com-esque story.  (12K)

The Lonely King – Fandom: Merlin – Merlin’s a grade school teacher and co-writes an anti-monarchy blog with his best friend. He is displeased when he learns that architect-in-training Prince Arthur will be leading the redesign of Merlin’s school. This is classic Arthur/Merlin dynamic and they fall for each other hard. So incredibly charming. <33 (58k)

In Time of Trial – Fandom: Merlin – Epic canon story with good characterization. “Uther fears his son’s power, and Merlin has helped Arthur flee to escape imprisonment. Now the two of them must fight to regain Arthur’s rightful place in Camelot.”Arthur is forced to take on his destiny earlier than planned, with his manservant Merlin at his side. (36K)

Keep Calm and Carry On – Fandom: Merlin – AU where Arthur works in the PM’s office and Merlin is his assistant. The West Wing AU, if you will. The pining is adorable, and the whole thing is pretty entertaining. (30K)

In Want of a Wife – Fandom: Merlin – Canon story where Arthur’s engagement is announced and he’s pleased that he can spend the year of his betrothal getting away with things that will be dismissed as last-minute flings. Merlin becomes one of those things. Pining galore. (43k)

This, You Protect – Fandom: Captain America (Movies) – The mission resets abruptly, from objective: kill to objective: protect.

The Student Prince – Fandom: Merlin – A Modern day Merlin AU set at the University of St Andrews, featuring teetotal kickboxers, secret wizards, magnificent bodyguards of various genders, irate fairies, imprisoned dragons, crumbling gothic architecture, arrogant princes, adorable engineering students, stolen gold, magical doorways, attempted assassination, drunken students, shaving foam fights, embarrassing mornings after, The Hammer Dance, duty, responsibility, friendship and true love…

Chosen Man – Fandom: The Eagle –

The son of the man who lost the Eagle of the Ninth would never be allowed a first command of his very own fort, would he?

Marcus is posted not to Isca Dumnoniorum, but to a wretched and run-down garrison north of the Wall. There he finds that he is the new centurion of a group of scouts and spies, all of them British. He has few supplies and no experience. His men distrust him. His superiors despise him. His second-in-command is an incompetent drunkard. And the local tribes are determined to kill all of them.

But the worst thing of all is one of Marcus’ soldiers. He is an enigmatic, dangerous, and insubordinate man by the name of Esca, who makes Marcus yearn for terrifying things he has never before wanted and can never, ever let himself have…

Higher Education – Fandom: The Breakfast Club – John Bender gets a life.

Play It Again – Fandom: Teen Wolf – Great, accurate portrayal of PTSD and hypervigilance. Answers some plot holes, too. And a “No Hale Fire” AU is always fun.

How to be Co-Ruler of Your Own Country Without Really Trying – Fandom: X-men: First Class – Erik intends to recruit Raven’s supposedly amazing, all-powerful older brother. Instead, he finds himself dealing with Charles Xavier, a weak, tweed-addled professor who seems to think powers don’t matter nearly as much as personality. Erik’s misconceptions are blown apart when Raven goes missing.

Humane Society – Fandom: X-men: First Class – Erik is turned into a kitten and rescued by Charles. Love ensues, except for the whole kitten thing.

Anarchy in the UK – Fandom: X-Men: First Class – King Charles III and the Duke of Exeter prepare to become uncles and welcome the heir to the throne.

All Things Shining – Fandom: Supernatural –

Something in the world is waking up.

It isn’t long before it’s brought to the attention of the Winchesters and Castiel: miracles are spreading across the country, the paranormal seems to be shrinking back on itself—and it all has something to do with the missing prayer book of a traveling preacher who died over a century ago.

Dean is convinced it’s all the lead-up to another Apocalypse; Sam and Castiel aren’t so sure. Regardless, it sends them out on a less-than-typical road-trip, following the Mississippi and remnants of a very old story that seems increasingly to call to them. And along the way the trio learn much more about themselves—and the consequences and origins of love—than they’d ever have anticipated.

On the Wings of War – Fandom: Supernatural –The four Horsemen are not just people with fancy rings. They aren’t even demons with fancy rings. They are another species entirely, a force unto themselves, and Lucifer is kidding himself if he thinks that they are at his beck and call. They are separate. They are neutral. Dean Winchester is not built like them.

Nightfall – Fandom: How to Train Your Dragon (movies) – Cloudjumper takes Hiccup along with Valka that night. Twenty years later a completely feral Hiccup, believing himself a dragon, is stranded on Berk… Now includes prequel and flashback stories, the sequel “Stormfall”, and ongoing short stories.

The Crown of the Summer Court – Fandom: Merlin – “The king sent me to get you,” Merlin said, with a tone that implied strongly that he wasn’t rolling his eyes where Arthur could see, but just wait until his back was turned. “He said you’re to get changed into formal clothes and meet him in the Great Hall, there’s a delegation coming from the Summer Court.”

Sealed With a Kiss – Fandom: Harry Potter – Harry Potter will fall in love with the first person who kisses him. Draco knows what he must do. A Christmassy Hogwarts fic, this.

I Know Where Babies Come From, Derek – Fandom: Teen Wolf –

Stiles finds a baby on the porch.

It looks exactly like him.

Well, this is awkward.

Top Romance Picks from our sister site, I Love Romantic Fiction!

Hello all! First off, if you’re under 18, please avert your eyes and don’t read this post. Things are about to get very real. We’re about to talk about a subject that is near and dear to a lot of you (and me! And Ellen too if we’re being honest): romance!

Shocker! In addition to YA and NA, we also read a whole lot of romance. It used to be taboo and we’d have to hide dog-eared copies of Nora Roberts’ latest under our pillows. Now, not so much. Obviously, this is not the forum to post romance reviews but happily for you, we created a sister site back in September where we do post them. It’s called I Love Romantic Fiction and really, if you haven’t looked at it, go go GO!

Obviously, as 2012 draws to a close, we decided that just as we picked our Top 3 YA/NA Books here, we should do the same for Romance. Because we figured if we like romance and YA/NA, you probably do too and just like us, you need some ideas for some decent books. We’ve chosen 6 books that we loved beyond all else (a teaser for you: Priscilla Glenn and EL James might play a part); some are well known, some you’ll never have heard of, all you’re certain to adore.

Here’s our list and enjoy!

Even More Top Picks of 2012!

Shhh! Don’t tell Ellen: I’m back with even more Top Picks of 2012! I can’t stand that I had to leave out a few books from my Top 3. It’s been eating away at me for the last day. I mean, have you ever had to narrow dozens of great things down to just three? It’s tough work! But I did it and now I’m regretting the fact that I couldn’t include these amazing books:
