I don’t know how Judith and I managed it but we actually got copies of this book about a month ago and have been dying to tell you about it. We are the luckiest people ever!!! Before we get started – I’m sure it doesn’t need to be said but there will be SPOILERS from the first book. So if you haven’t read the first book then stop now and

go read Obsidian! (PS – are you crazy? Why haven’t you read Obsidian?!?!)

Plot: After Katy is healed by Daemon in the fight with the Arum things start to change. She has this new connection with Daemon which seems to make him think he’s in love with her. She’s suddenly come down with a weird virus which sends her to the hospital. There’s a new student – Blake – whose blatant interest in Katy causes strain between her and Daemon. And then there’s the constant pressure to keep everything hidden from the DOD, trying to find out what happened to Dawson and Bethany, dealing with her mom’s new boyfriend, and fighting her attraction to Daemon until she knows why he’s suddenly interested in her.

Review: Here’s the short review in case you came here thinking “hmmm, I really liked Obsidian but I’m not sure about buying this one, I’ll check with the I Love YA Fiction girls first” – THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. I really didn’t think anything could top the first book but it happened! I’ve read it at least once a week since Judith and I got our copy. No joke at one point I sent her a text that said “I just keep re-reading Onyx over and over again! Make me stop!” But she didn’t because she’s an awesome friend. Heck, even though we already had the book I purchased it just in case there was anything different and (to steal a phrase from Katy) holy alien babies am I glad I did because I got to read one of the seriously hot make-out scenes from Daemon’s pov. SWOON!!

There are so many things I loved about this book I don’t even know where to start. It was fast-paced but not so much that I felt like events were being rushed. The sexual tension between Katy and Daemon was just as high as ever (honestly every time he calls her “Kitten” or pokes her in the back with his pen I swoon like a 14-year-old girl). The Dawson/Bethany stuff didn’t seem out of place and I can’t wait to see what happens with all of that. If there’s anything I need to complain about it’s the lack of Katy/Dee friendship. While I understand why this happened, I love love loved their friendship in the first book and I wish we could have gotten the awesome Katy/Dee as well as Katy/Daemon.

Oh and anyone who reads this and loved it as much as Judith and I did needs to say a HUGE cosmic thank you to Liz Pelletier who, according to the acknowledgements, is the one who “demanded that I put more Daemon into Onyx.” I don’t know about you guys but I’m considering nominating her for a Nobel Prize of some sort.

In the end I’m going to give this one a 10 out of 10.

Based on the following criteria:

How much did I like the heroine: 100000000000000. There are some hard and fast rules here at ILYAF and one is that I LOVE KATY. Katy’s awesomeness and her blogging were the only reasons why I agreed to do this blog when Judith asked. I love that she cares so much about her friends that she realizes the best way to keep them safe is to become as strong and independent as possible so as not to be a risk. While I think she’s completely insane, her ability to resist Daemon’s advances is amazing. She’s had such a challenging life but isn’t all “woe is me” and really stands up for what and who she believes in. She is beyond awesomesauce.

How much did I like the love interest: 10000000000000000000000000. Oh man do I love me some Daemon. He can be such a jerk but also the sweetest guy ever, he’s so protective of those he cares about, he’s beyond sexy. I want him to be my boyfriend. Especially if he brings me smoothies and cookies and pokes me in the back with his pen and…okay I need to calm myself down. And as if I didn’t already love him enough he then joins Katy on a video for her blog in which he states “What’s the obsession with fallen angels?” OMG!! I couldn’t have said it any better

skin It about The pfizer viagra online skin completely for it!

How believable is the plot: 5. I mean, aliens who seem like characters from Cocoon (but way younger and hotter). But who cares? It’s all so awesome.

How much did I like the writing style/editing/etc: 10. This woman knows how to write and edit. In the potentially dozen times I’ve read the book I’ve NEVER found anything wrong with the writing/editing. She is Batman.

How much did I want to keep reading: 10000000000. DO NOT DISTURB when I’m reading this. I was re-reading at work today and sighed in someone’s face when they tried to interrupt me.

Glasses of wine I drank while reading: 0. Who has time to drink when they’re this engrossed?

Final Score: 10/10. I am about to start counting down the days until the next book (Opal) is released in December, especially after reading this teaser from J.L.’s blog!!
