If you’re here on I Love YA Fiction, you more than likely know that I…well, I love YA fiction. Really love it. I love the character development, the moment of self-awareness, the deepening maturity and the subtle change from child to adult. It’s a heady mix and beautiful to read. Only problem? I read so much of it over the last three years that it all got rather tired and monotonous; the dreaded B word cropped up quite a lot whenever I talked about books. You all know the B word, right? It’s the kiss of death for authors and reads alike: BORING. That’s right. All the YA books I read were just boring.

So when a friend suggested I give Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe a shot, I was skeptical and ready to be bored bored bored.

But ya know what? I was wrong wrong wrong! This book is outstanding! It’s all the best parts of YA with none of the BS. And if you’re anything like me, it’ll hook you just as quickly…

People. Hands to yourselves and take one big step back: I have a new book boyfriend and he is off limits.

No really, while I may have shared in the past, this time I mean it.

Cash is mine.

We first met him in Off Campus and were given hints at how truly amazing he could be. But in The Girl Next Door, he proves hands down why he’s practically perfect (for me) in every way. He’s that jock with a heart of gold willing to play the lovable goof to spare someone pain; the sexy and extremely open minded hottie willing to try anything once and break all barriers in the bedroom; the dude who will give up a job and a home and a sweet life handed to him by his parents in order to mold himself into something self-made and worthwhile. He’s well…he’s Cash and no matter what some people might contend, he is ALL mine.

Quickie Review: Canine by Jordan C Price

canine-400Canine by Jordan C Price

Genre: Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy novella

Format: Kindle ARC

Score: 10/10

Plot: What’s the difference between a faithful companion and a feral animal? Wild Bill suspects the line separating the two is shaky at best. Supposedly, Michael has been tamed, and he swears he gave up hunting. But when he comes home covered in blood and reeking of adrenaline, Bill fears Michael has crossed paths with another bloodsucker, and the urge to exterminate the vamp was too powerful to resist.

Michael doesn’t need to hunt vampires to stir up trouble. His run-in with threatening neighbors has left him baffled, demoralized, and teetering on the brink of yet another episode of depression. It tears Bill up inside to see Michael suffer—unfortunately, the sorrow also trips his most primal vamp triggers. Before he knows it, his own inner beast rears up, ravenous, insatiable, and ready to tear into the next thing that crosses his path…making him wonder if it was wishful thinking to hope that either of them had been successfully domesticated.

Review: Phenomenal writing. Fantastic storytelling. Over way too quick. BUY IT OMG YOU NEED IT.

Would you guys be mad if I left it at that? Seriously, Jordan C Price is of that genre of writers I like to call, the Masters. Master storytellers like her can give us a 28 page novella, pack in a tight plot, beautiful wording, a bit of mystery, and a romantic interlude that packs a punch(!). Combined it leaves us satisfied yet craving more; each piece independently is just as good. How is it possible?! I’ve never come across a writer so capable of writing Urban Fantasy. She has a macabre way of thinking that will root around in your brain and linger. Fans of her Channeling Morpheus series will find this novella delicious and fulfilling. People who’ve never read Channeling Morpheus could enjoy it just as much though a lot of context would obviously be lost. This one is so worth a read…if only to get a glimpse of the Southern Gothic world you are loathe to leave after reading Channeling Morpheus for Scary Mary and A Bitter Taste of Sweet Oblivion.

What you’ll love: wondrous writing; dark, twisted vampire laden setting; romantic and steamy romance between a vampire and his human lover; Wild Bill acting as Michael’s Knight in Shining Armor; a chance to revisit the CM universe again.

What you may hate: only 28 pages (when all you want is more); filthy, smutty vampires leaving a bloody trail all over the USA; not much else?

Score: 10/10

Did you see the score I gave this one? Did you? DID YOU?! 10/10. 10 whopping stars. That’s not something I hand out willy nilly to all the books that grace this blog. No, this book is special. It’s ridiculously special. Don’t get me wrong: it’s the funny, sexy, intelligent, fast paced, and lovely book we expect from Heidi Cullinan. But above all – and what sets it apart from everything – is how wholly unique it is to the genre. Read the plot, give it a chance; give me 50 pages and if you hate it, forget it. But if you trust my reviews, then do yourself a favor and one-click this book. It is oh so worth it.

Romance Review: Angel by Laura Lee…you must buy this book!

Angel by Laura Lee

Published by: Itineris Press

Format: Paperback ARC/Kindle PDF

Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance

Reviewed by: Judith

2 years ago, I was at Book Expo America for the first time, generally walking around a big open space in a book daze. People would look at my badge, see “Reviewer”, and thrust books right into my open hands. Free books were everywhere! And I took them ALL! Thank god I did because little did I know that I held in my hands a book that was to become my top M/M read of all time. I’m serious here. This book is the one I urge everyone to read.

I’ll give you fair warning now: Angel isn’t a flashy book; there’s no crazy drama or gorgeous hunks. There’s no fantastic sex, trash talk, or impossible situations. There’s not even a happily ever after. But what there is, is a finely crafted love story which really spoke to me on a deeper level than I could ever describe adequately here. All I can say is you must give this book a chance and hopefully it will touch you as deeply as it did me.

YA/NA Review: How to Repair a Mechanical Heart by JC Lillis

Let me tell you a secret: I’m not sure why but I had it in my head that I didn’t like this book. Don’t look at me like that. Stop. Let me explain. I have a notoriously bad memory and it told me (repeatedly) that I’d tried How to Repair a Mechanical Heart before and for whatever reason, I just didn’t like it. No idea as to why and no idea where that came from but that voice inside of me kept whispering this crap for ages and it WAS WRONG! Dead wrong. Now, I don’t admit mistakes often – I’m an Aries, we’re perfect…and beautiful and wonderful and funny and amazingly humble – but I’m stating it for the record now, mea culpa and all that. This book is fabulous. No, wait. It’s more than that. It’s so cool that I’m sure in some alternate universe I have neon glitter pink font and some blinking gifs of celebrities screaming at anyone who will listen in order to show what an excellent read this is…cause it truly is!

Hands down, one of the best YA books I’ve read this year but caveat: its score is based off of the overwhelming feeling of happy nostalgia I felt when reading it. If you are younger or older, you will definitely be able to empathize with the main characters but maybe not at the same high level of awesome I did as a child of the 90s.

Dear Charles: Do you like to make me cry? Do you? No, really! DO YOU?! I’m still sobbing into hubby’s arm while he just stares at me and tries to shake me off so he can watch some Youtube clip featuring MMA fighters doing whatever it is they do. Your book was just so good. Too good. The whole entire time I kept hoping for a miracle and I kept saying, this is going to have a happy ending. I swear, I can feel it in my bones. I just know it! Right, guys? RIGHT???!
